Automation Technology Outlook—Production Automation Today and Tomorrow
Automation is no longer experimental in print and packaging, but it is still unevenly adopted, for many reasons. The most mature automation is in prepress, color control, estimating, scheduling, inline inspection, web-to-print, MIS/ERP integration, and short-run digital production. The less mature part is true end-to-end, lights-out production across mixed analog, digital, converting, finishing, shipping, and customer-service workflows.
Automation today is mostly being applied as an optimization layer, not as a replacement for the plant operation. Current uses include predictive maintenance, defect detection, color and ink optimization, production benchmarking, prepress layout/design optimization, job ticketing assistance, and simulation of packaging designs for lower material use.
