In March 2018, Hamburger Rieger GmbH will start the scheduled construction of its second paper machine at its Spremberg location.
The new plant’s commissioning is scheduled for summer 2020.
The planned product range includes white and brown corrugated base papers (testliner) based on 100% recycled paper. With a width of 7.80 metres, the machine will produce 500,000 tonnes of paper per year. For the preparation of white base materials an environmentally friendly deinking section will be installed. It combines innovative resource-conserving raw material processing and the paper machine’s patented mode of operation.

A packaging solutions supplier for large manufacturers has purchased a new four-color MetalStar 3 press from KBA-MetalPrint. The new MetalStar 3 four-color press line will include KBA UV curing, fully automatic plate change (FAPC), KBA CleanTronic Synchro for simultaneous washing of the blanket and impression cylinder, simultaneous roller wash (SRW), automatic camera register control (ACRC), sheet management system, inline Metalcoat 470 coater, and a double box stacker. Soilfood is processing the fibre-based side streams generated in the production of paperboard from manufacturer Metsä Board, into various soil improvement fibres for local farms. Soilfood has previously used these side streams from Metsä Board's board mills at Kemi and Äänekoski. Now the cooperation has been extended to the Tako mill, located in the centre of Tampere. Metsä Board's cooperation with Soilfood started with a research project initiated in 2015 by the Natural Resources Institute Finland. The study looked at how wood-based fibre sludge had the ability to reduce erosion and nutrients leaching from fields to water bodies. The large-scale use of side streams is part of a new circular economy approach, where raw materials are kept in use as long as possible and existing materials are re-used. The two companies are also working together to develop other new solutions for the beneficial use of existing production side streams.
