Icy Hot’s Scratch-and-Sniff Carton Solves a Shelf Problem

Brand owner Opella encapsulated its actual product fragrance oil and mixed it into a standard spot varnish on its products’ carton. That means no sticker application on otherwise recyclable paperboard, no new packaging equipment, and no more shoppers tearing open glued end cartons to smell the new fragrances inside.

  • Icy Hot’s new 2-oz roll-on comes in three fragrances designed to work with menthol, not mask it, addressing consumer concerns about medicinal odors in pain relief products.
  • The scratch-and-sniff feature uses actual fragrance oils from the product encapsulated into a clear, matte varnish applied in a standard printing process.
  • This is the first scratch-and-sniff technology used in OTC topical pain relief packaging, with no new tooling, equipment retrofitting, or substrate changes required.
