Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box launches new thermo-laminated film

The Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box Ibi facility in Spain has started the production of bags with a new and more sustainable thermo-laminated metallised film – M-Compact 77.

Thanks to the thermo-lamination technology, which bonds individual films together through exposure to heat without using the adhesives that are required for classic lamination, production of M-Compact 77 is more environmentally friendly and resource efficient. Smurfit Kappa has achieved a 12% bag weight reduction and 7% less CO2 emissions.1

Commenting on the innovation, Victor Juan, Film Manager at Smurfit Kappa Ibi, said: “We have been developing this film for more than two years; challenging our suppliers, analysing our own film structures and applying our strictest testing protocols.

“Having full control of the manufacturing processes on all steps, we can guarantee excellent performance of our new metal bags on production lines, supply security and efficient traceability for our customers, and good product preservation during transport, on shelf and at home.”

Pascual Martinez, General Manager of Smurfit Kappa Ibi, added: “Sustainability is embedded into all our business operations. Today, Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box cannot imagine a single product development that does not involve reducing the carbon footprint of the lifecycle of our bags.

M-Compact 77 will broaden the vast portfolio of films offered by Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box for different market applications and supply chain requirements.

Corrugated comeback? Fiber’s yearslong slide could be easing

Forrest Gump famously referenced life’s uncertainty with an analogy to a box of chocolates. A similar comparison could be made now for containerboard and box markets: “You never know what you’re gonna get.”  A sustained down cycle for fiber markets could soon end, in part due to this year’s uncommonly large containerboard capacity reductions and a milder-than-feared tariff environment, analysts cautiously suggest. “Time will tell, but this complexion of results suggests that we are approaching an inflection (hopefully positive) based on our experience,” said George Staphos, BofA Securities research analyst. The capacity reductions could help to rebalance supply and demand, correcting a yearslong oversupply that has plagued both North American and global markets. Yet improvements are not expected to be robust or materialize quickly, analysts say. RaboResearch expects containerboard demand to experience a “modest” recovery, with a 0.53% compound annual growth rate through the second quarter of 2027.

ANDRITZ to optimize fiberline at Stora Enso’s Enocell mill for more flexible and sustainable production

International technology group ANDRITZ has received an order from Stora Enso to optimize the fiberline at the Enocell pulp mill in Uimaharju, Finland. This will help the customer meet the growing demand for non-bleached renewable packaging materials while at the same time reducing its ecological footprint. The Enocell pulp mill in eastern Finland is part of Stora Enso’s Biomaterials division. It produces softwood and hardwood pulp with an annual production capacity of 630,000 tonnes. The site was founded in 1967 and also includes a sawmill.
