The Magazine’s New Job: Publish What AI Can’t Commoditize

Every publisher knows the pressure to keep the content calendar full. There are newsletters to send, websites to update, social channels to feed, and another issue already around the corner. Now, AI can produce basic articles and recommendations in seconds. The challenge is becoming less about producing enough content and more about producing something readers can’t get anywhere else.

The Reuters Institute’s Journalism, Media, and Technology Trends and Predictions 2026 found that publishers plan to put greater emphasis on original reporting, contextual analysis, and human stories, while reducing their focus on some service journalism and evergreen content that AI can increasingly summarize for readers. It’s a shift that raises an interesting question for magazine publishers: if some information is becoming easier to commoditize, what deserves a place in the magazine?
