Walmart brings drone delivery to Florida

Walmart is following through with plans to deliver online orders via drone in a major Florida metro market.

The discount giant is now offering its drone delivery service in Orlando via a partnership it launched with Wing, an on-demand drone delivery provider powered by Google parent company Alphabet, for drone delivery in the Dallas-Fort Worth market in August 2023.

Walmart is now delivering to more than 50,000 homes, businesses, and apartment buildings surrounding Supercenter locations in Apopka and Clermont, Fla. The retailer plans to expand the drone delivery program throughout Central Florida, including three Supercenter locations in Ocoee, Clermont and Haines City in the coming weeks.

Consumer sentiment falls to record low as gas prices, inflation worries rise

Consumer sentiment fell for the third straight month in May as supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continued to lift gasoline prices. Sentiment is now just below the previous historical low seen in June 2022, according to the University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers, whose Index of Consumer Sentiment fell 10% in May to 44.8 in May.  In addition, consumers anticipate that business conditions will worsen over both short and long time horizons. The Current Conditions Index fell 12.8% to 45.8, and is down 22% year over year.

1-800-Flowers named Melanie Babcock its first chief marketing and growth officer, continuing the gifting company’s daunting transformation under new chief executive Adolfo Villagomez. Babcock will lead marketing, brand positioning, customer acquisition and retention, and growth initiatives, reporting to Villagomez, the struggling company’s new CEO -- and a former CMO of Home Depot. Beyond its flagship flowers business, the Jericho, N.Y.-based company owns Harry & David, Shari’s Berries and Moose Munch Popcorn. Earlier this month, 1-800-Flowers reported an annual loss of $200 million, with revenue down 8% to $1.69 billion.

Families plan to spend $250 per child on back-to-school supplies

Higher prices are pushing families to spend more on back-to-school needs this year. Families are expected to spend $252 per child on back-to-school purchases this year, marking a 6% year-over-year increase, according to the Consumer Pulse Back-to-School 2026 survey released by audit, tax and advisory firm KPMG LLP. Nearly 80% of parents say the increase in planned spending reflects higher prices for the same school essentials and technology purchases as last year, including big-ticket items like laptops.
