UK Packaging Sector Struggles to Meet Recyclability Targets

Despite stricter environmental requirements and ambitious corporate sustainability targets, nine out of ten UK packaging producers continue to place materials on the market that are difficult or problematic to recycle. New data shows that only one in ten businesses has fully transitioned to packaging classified as readily recyclable.

The figures were reported by Packaging World and originate from the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, Defra. The data was released following an information request submitted by BagKraft, a manufacturer and supplier of sustainable bags and customised promotional packaging.

The statistics cover 11,701 companies subject to UK packaging producer responsibility requirements. Of these, 89 per cent still supply packaging that is either difficult to recycle, carries a mixed recyclability rating or contains material combinations that complicate the recycling process.
