New Jersey secures up to $2.5 billion from DuPont, 3M for PFAS cleanup

New Jersey is set to receive as much as $2.5 billion from a settlement with DuPont and 3M over environmental damages linked to PFAS chemicals.

It’s one of the biggest moves the state has made to hold major companies responsible for decades of chemical contamination.

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, a long-running case over toxic “forever chemicals” that have endangered water systems and natural resources statewide is coming to a close.

The Inquirer reported that, under the order, 3M will put between $400 million and $450 million, and DuPont and related companies will contribute another $875 million over 25 years, into funds intended to restore natural resources and address damage to drinking water systems.

The outlet noted that DuPont entities have another $1.2 billion in remediation commitments, pushing the total value of the settlements to as much as $2.5 billion.

Metsä Group is looking into the construction of a carbon capture facility

Metsä Group is exploring possibilities to construct a carbon capture facility at one of its pulp or bioproduct mills. The investigation is a continuation of the work initiated in the spring, in which Metsä Group and Fortum jointly studied the capture of wood-based carbon dioxide and its use in the chemical industry and hydrogen economy, for example. According to Pirita Mikkanen, Metsä Group’s VP, Energy, wood-based carbon dioxide is a major production side stream in the forest industry, and it could be used more efficiently. “Our cooperation with Fortum has given us good experiences of and greater insight into carbon capture. I believe we can use wood-based carbon dioxide emissions much more than we currently do. We see new cooperation opportunities with the chemical industry, among others.”

Kamloops pulp mill to receive new machines to reduce air pollution

In an annual air report prepared for Kamloops city council by Domtar, the company will invest $3.5 million towards new machines. One is an electro-static precipitator that is used to remove smoke and dust particles from gases and the other is a scrubber used to clean and reduce air emissions. It will also eliminate the need for liquid sulfur dioxide - one of the most hazardous liquids used at Domtar mill. The 2017 pulp mill data also shows air emissions and odour from the manufacturer has decreased in the last few years, but the report does not say if the new equipment will reduce odour caused by air pollution.
