Finland’s Paper Industry Cuts Fossil CO₂ Emissions by 85 Per cent

Finland’s pulp and paper industry has reduced its fossil carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 85 per cent since 1990. At the same time, the amount of waste sent to landfill has fallen by 97 per cent compared with 1992. The improvements reflect decades of investment in cleaner production technologies, more efficient energy use and better utilisation of industrial by-products.

The figures were published on 12 October 2026 by the Finnish Forest Industries Federation, which reviewed the sector’s environmental performance over several decades.

In 1990, fossil carbon dioxide emissions from Finland’s pulp and paper industry amounted to 5.88 million tonnes.

By 2025, the figure had fallen to approximately 900,000 tonnes, representing a reduction of around 85 per cent.

The decline has been driven partly by improved energy efficiency and the replacement of fossil fuels with bioenergy.
