Brazilian pulpmaker Suzano Papel e Celulose SA lost about 80,000 tonnes of pulp production and 25,000 tonnes of paper production during a late-May truckers’ strike, the company said in a securities filing on Thursday.
For an 11-day period in late May, truckers protesting high fuel prices blocked highways across Brazil, seriously affecting industries ranging from retail to agribusiness to aviation. (Reporting by Gram Slattery)

The company reported operating income of $235 million in the quarter, compared to an operating loss of $101 million in the fourth quarter. The improvement reflects higher selling prices in all segments ($206 million) and the net favorable impact of the indefinite idling of pulp and paper operations at the Calhoun (Tennessee) mill ($7 million). This was partially offset by lower shipments as a result of logistics constraints ($29 million), as well as higher fiber ($25 million) and freight expenses ($8 million). The company recorded lower selling, general and administrative expenses ($7 million), mainly due to lower share-based compensation expenses in the quarter. The prior quarter results were unfavorably affected by charges related to the indefinite idling of pulp and paper operations at the Calhoun mill ($171 million).
Perce Thrower, UK sales, Crown Van Gelder - We ended 2022 on a positive note with a record-breaking volume of our Crown Letsgo inkjet-treated substrates, but due to a sudden cashflow problem, we went into administration in early 2023. The failure of the company was due to high costs of energy and pulp in the second half of 2022, and a drop in demand in the last months of 2022. During the tense weeks that followed we received a lot of positive messages from customers, merchants, OEMs inkjet press manufacturers and other paper mills, which increased our belief that Crown Van Gelder could and should survive. On 1 March we were able to announce that with the help of a new investor we could continue the paper mill as Crown Van Gelder International. The lead partner in the relaunch is EPAC Technologies, with whom we codeveloped our leading inkjet paper over five years ago, and we have continued to collaborate since. This will change the industry in a great way for our customers.
Norske Skog has received a well-developed recapitalization proposal from a substantial number of the secured holders of the SSN (EUR 290m, 2019) bond and the NSF (EUR 100m, 2020) loan, as detailed in the 28 July 2017 stock exchange release. Certain unsecured bondholders have further provided an alternative proposal. To further secure the financial situation of the operating business, Norske Skog is in the process of receiving a commitment letter for a EUR 16 million liquidity facility from a substantial number of the holders of the SSN and NSF.
"We are very pleased that key stakeholders are willing to support the business operations of Norske Skog through liquidity facilities like the offered loans. Our paper mills are highly competitive business units with a prosperous future irrespective of the final solution to the group's capital structure. We have now secured the operating business by both relief on interest payments and this new financing, and there should be no reason to question the stability of our operating business through the refinancing" said Lars P.S. Sperre, President and CEO of Norske Skog. Click Read More below for additional detail.
