Total packaging papers & specialty packaging shipments in July increased seven percent compared to July 2019. They were up three percent when compared to the same seven months of 2019.
The operating rate was 84.5 percent, up 2.2 points from July 2019 and down 0.7 points year-to-date.
Mill inventories at the end of July decreased 1,000 short tons from the previous month and were up 17,000 short tons compared to July 2019.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is likely to publish a final ruling in January 2023, requiring manufacturers (including importers) to report information on PFAS manufactured or imported since Jan. 1, 2011. If the rule is finalized as proposed, manufacturers will have to report use of any materials with PFAS and stop using new products containing intentionally added PFAS. Will Ferrero’s WK Kellogg buyout affect packaging? Ferrero Group’s pending $3.1-billion acquisition of WK Kellogg will give it access to Big K’s brands, including manufacturing, marketing, and distribution resources in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. It’s a supply chain plan that broadens its economies of scale for greater shared resources everywhere. This could include packaging efficiencies across the board, including procurement, production operations, logistics, product innovation, and even sustainable packaging. On the latter, Ferrero’s collaboration with Milliken to develop clear, lightweight, recyclable polypropylene packaging for its premium Ferrero Roche candies.
