Trump adjusts list of Canadian packaging, products subject to tariffs

Cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated paper or paperboard are among the products being removed from the list under Section 338.

President Donald Trump is adjusting which products are subject to a 50% tariff under Section 338, effective Oct. 30, according to documents from the White House on Friday. The changes include some packaging components and materials.

Trump first ordered the 50% tariffs in July. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney introduced retaliatory tariffs in September. Trump then expanded the scope of the levies, with paper and plastics feeling the pinch.

The October updates remove certain carrying containers, corrugated paper, molded pulp and other products. Simultaneously, it adds certain paper, paperboard and labels. The White House framed the changes as related to motor vehicles commerce.
