Container ship completes new Arctic route trial
South Korea’s PanStar Acro completed a 50-day round trip to Europe via the Arctic, reaching Felixstowe in about 20 days on a government-backed trial. A one-way transit roughly 10 days shorter than the Suez route is eye-catching, but the ship carried only 737 loaded TEUs of a planned 1,300, and analysts note commercial viability hinges on schedule reliability, ice delays, insurance and fuel costs. Seoul’s consultation with Moscow adds geopolitical friction for Western partners. With regular service targeted for 2030, this remains a proof of concept rather than a Suez alternative.
