Take a look inside the new Barnes & Noble in Chicago

As the retailer builds out its store footprint, a location in the heart of the Illinois city is keeping readers in The Loop.

Barnes & Noble is ready to keep Windy City readers stocked with their favorite books, most recently with the opening of a store on State Street in Chicago’s Loop on Aug. 19.

And customers are seemingly ready, too — a line formed down the block on opening day so shoppers could get inside at 9:00 a.m. The store continued to draw large crowds throughout the day.

After 15 years of declining store numbers, Barnes & Noble is focused on expanding its footprint, including opening 60 locations last year. The company opened roughly the same number in 2024.

The Loop store is in a building once occupied by Old Navy, and, before that, by Borders until the closure of all of its stores in 2011. It is the fourth new bookstore Barnes & Noble has opened in the Chicagoland area in 2026, following locations in Skokie, Hyde Park and Oak Park.

UPS announced second-quarter 2023 consolidated revenues of $22.1 billion, a 10.9% decrease from the second quarter of 2022. Consolidated operating profit was $2.8 billion, down 21.4% compared to the second quarter of 2022, and down 18.4% on an adjusted basis. Diluted earnings per share were $2.42 for the quarter; adjusted diluted earnings per share of $2.54 were 22.8% below the same period in 2022. For the second quarter of 2023, GAAP results included after-tax transformation and other charges of $106 million, or $0.12 per diluted share.

Comics Retailers Are Optimistic Despite Market Changes, Sales Declines

Despite a drop in sales in 2017 and store closings, the mood was mostly upbeat at the 2018 Diamond Retailer summit, held April 6-8 in conjunction with the C2E2 pop culture convention in Chicago. Many retailers indicated to PW that they are beginning to see a slight upturn in sales in recent months. But this comes after a year in which sales were down in every category. According to figures released by Diamond Comics Distributors—which distributes comics and graphic novels to a network of about 2,000 specialty comics shops around the country—periodical comics sales were down 10% in 2017 compared to 2016, graphic novels declined 9% and the number of direct market stores served by Diamond slipped about 1%. The New York Times Company Reports 2018 First-Quarter Results

Total revenues for the first quarter of 2018 increased 3.8 percent to $413.9 million from $398.8 million in the first quarter of 2017. Subscription revenues increased 7.5 percent, while advertising revenues decreased 3.4 percent and other revenues increased 5.0 percent. Operating costs increased in the first quarter of 2018 to $378.0 million compared with $368.6 million in the first quarter of 2017, largely due to higher compensation costs, which was partially offset by lower print production and distribution costs.
