Domtar Idles Howe Sound Pulp Mill Indefinitely

Domtar will indefinitely idle its Howe Sound mill and Bayview Fibre chipping facility in Port Mellon, British Columbia, affecting approximately 400 employees.

The indefinite idling will remove about 380,000 metric tonnes of annual northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp capacity from the market.

Domtar attributed the decision to weaker demand from Asia, persistently low global pulp prices and declining access to affordable domestic fibre. These pressures have continued despite nearly C$500 million in capital investments since the company acquired the Howe Sound mill in 2010, as well as the construction of the Bayview Fibre facility.

Comparable operating result was EUR 244 million (174). *Result before taxes was EUR 330 million (121). Comparable result before taxes was EUR 232 million (160). *Comparable return on capital employed was 15.8% (12.6). *Net cash flow from operations was EUR 135 million (95).
