How Limited-Edition Packaging Creates Lasting Impact

A humorous summer release reveals serious lessons about limited-edition packaging.

I hadn’t thought about Capri Sun in years — not since my kids were very young. But last summer, the brand caught my attention with a creative limited-edition packaging campaign.

To celebrate the longest day of the year, Capri Sun introduced the “Solstice Pouch,” an extra-long pouch filled with 3x the usual amount of Capri Sun. And, yes, it even included an equally long straw.

This campaign is both funny and clever. Everyone associates Capri Sun with its distinctive pouch, and by making it comically oversized, the brand reminds shoppers that its fruit punch is still around.

Limited editions give brands permission to loosen up and break their own rules. Because print runs are smaller, the risk to the brand is lower, but the reward is remarkably compelling because consumer attention is heightened.
