US slaps 50% tariffs on many Canada imports

The tariffs appear to include imported containerboard, uncoated freesheet and boxboard, according to a Tuesday note to investors from Michael Roxland, senior paper and packaging analyst at Truist Securities. The United States imports annually from Canada approximately 1.12 million tons of containerboard, or approximately 3% of total supply, and approximately 400,000 tons of UCFS, or roughly 7% of supply, Roxland said. However, the measure should have a lesser influence on boxboard, as the U.S. imports a “nominal” amount of that grade from Canada, he said.

The duties apply to all covered goods, regardless of whether they originate under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, per a fact sheet released by the White House.
