Fiat launches industry-first car using recycled material from used beverage cartons

Beverage cartons have found a new life as part of a groundbreaking development for the automotive industry. With the launch of the latest model of Fiat Grande Panda, Fiat has become the first car manufacturer to incorporate recycled materials from used beverage cartons in a vehicle. Each Fiat Grande Panda contains recycled material from the thin layers of polyethylene and aluminium used in 140 beverage cartons. This recycled material is used inside the plastics of the car’s interior. Specifically, it is used in the central console, dashboard, interior front and rear door panels. PolyAl is a combination of polymers and aluminium components recovered during the recycling of beverage cartons. Beverage cartons are made of, on average, 70% paperboard, 25% polymers and 5% aluminium. This combination of materials is the key to aseptic packaging, where ultra-thin layers of aluminium and polymers protect the food or beverage inside, extending the product’s shelf life without the need for preservatives or refrigeration.

Toolkit Offers Resources for Foodservice Packaging Recovery

The Foodservice Packaging Institute introduces a free toolkit that offers step-by-step guidance for implementing an in-store recycling and/or composting program. The newly launched Foodservice Packaging Recovery Toolkit, from the Foodservice Packaging Institute, provides free resources for recovering foodservice packaging, thanks to a multi-year effort with input from many stakeholders. “Recovering cups, containers, boxes, bags, and other foodservice packaging is a topic of intense interest not only for consumers but also for the foodservice packaging supply chain and those in the recycling and composting industries,” says Lynn M. Dyer, President of FPI. “We’ve created this toolkit to respond to the questions and needs of many different stakeholders involved in the recovery process.”

Hong Kong consumers willing to pay a premium for sustainable paper

Asia Pulp & Paper releases survey results about sustainable and safe paper usage in Hong Kong Promoting industry collaboration to offer eco-products. Gold East Trading (Hong Kong) Company Limited, a subsidiary of Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), today announced the results of the “Sustainable and Safe Paper Usage in Hong Kong” survey which revealed that nearly 70 per cent of Hong Kong consumers are willing to pay an additional 5 per cent or more to purchase paper products from sustainable sources.
