Sustana earns ISEGA certification for recycled fibers

The certification follows an extensive evaluation by ISEGA, an internationally recognized testing and certification body for food contact materials. According to Sustana, the approval verifies that both recycled fiber grades comply with a wide range of regulatory and safety requirements governing paper and paperboard used in direct contact with food.

ISEGA confirmed compliance with U.S. FDA regulations for paper components used with aqueous, fatty and dry foods, as well as with EU Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 on food contact materials. The certification also covers Germany’s BfR guidelines, the Council of Europe’s technical guidance for paper and board, CONEG and EU toxics-in-packaging requirements, and DIN EN 71 standards related to chemical and heavy metal migration.

With the certification in place, EnviroLife and EnviroNatural can be used in papers and packaging designed for direct contact with dry, moist and fatty foods, supporting applications where both performance and food safety are critical.

North Carolina State University is investigating the crucial role that SFI-certified forests play in facilitating landscape connectivity in a changing climate. Landscape connectivity represents the extent to which a landscape supports the ability of plants and animals to move across the landscape. Some species with a limited range, like salamanders or pitcher plants, depend on connected landscapes to maintain healthy populations. Connecting habitats has long been recognized as one of the keys to supporting conservation in landscapes dominated by people. But rapid changes to the earth’s climate and land use patterns mean new research is needed to ensure that conservation potential is maximized, while mitigating climate change impacts and limiting the loss of biodiversity.

Apply for working groups to develop procedures for carbon credits and biodiversity credits

FSC seeks applications for the members of the WG for the development of the ‘Procedure for High-Quality Carbon Credits’. The WG will consist of three chamber-balanced members, representing environmental, social, and economic interests, and three technical experts to deliver on the tasks and responsibilities outlined in the Terms of Reference (ToR). The WG should collectively bring strong technical expertise in carbon accounting, forest carbon methodologies, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems, and FSC procedures. Familiarity with key carbon standards, safeguards, benefit-sharing, and the voluntary carbon market is essential. Experience working with forest managers, including smallholders and Indigenous Peoples, is highly valued.

Klabin donates corrugated board cribs to social action in Camaragibe

Klabin donated 100 cribs made of corrugated board to the Escola Internacional de Aldeia (Pernambuco), which is implementing a social project in partnership with the Amigos da Rua Institute (IAR) in the city of Camaragibe in Pernambuco. The initiative aims to distribute cribs and layettes to homeless mothers and babies. Portable, easy to assemble and with an aesthetic appeal that is reminiscent of the children’s universe, the corrugated board cribs were designed by the packaging engineering area at Klabin’s Goiana Unit exclusively for this initiative. Suitable for babies aged up to three months or weighing up to six kilos, the cribs must not come in contact with water and intense heat sources in order to retain their structural characteristics.
