IP to continue supplying Sylvamo withUFS from Riverdale mill until April 2026

Members of the Technical Association of the Pulp & Paper Industry (TAPPI) recently elected Bill Edwards, Domtar’s senior vice president of pulp and paper operations, to serve on the TAPPI board of directors. TAPPI is the leading association for the worldwide pulp, paper, packaging, tissue and converting industries. Through information exchange and events, it has provided management training and networking to the pulp and paper industry’s leaders for more than 100 years. Edwards leads Domtar’s pulp and paper manufacturing, converting/coating operations, and optimization efforts, and he brings more than 30 years of experience in the industry to his role on the TAPPI board of directors.

Climate change requires everyone to use natural resources more efficiently, and more and more consumers demand sustainable products. The numbers relating to increased eco-awareness are quite substantial: over a third of consumers are prepared to pay up to 25 percent more for a more sustainable option and 85 percent of people indicate having shifted their purchase behaviour towards more sustainable options. Sustainability is becoming an important purchase criterion and 60 percent of consumers already consider it as such. Stora Enso’s pulp customers are getting more and more questions about their products’ sustainability and if these products are compostable. As responsibility lies at the heart of Stora Enso, we initiated a project to certify all our paper pulp grades as compostable. This means that Stora Enso’s paper pulp grades must fulfill specific compostability criteria according to EN 13432 standard; these are measured by an independent external party.

The net investment amount for the conversion project at Norske Skog Golbey will increase from EUR 265 to 300 million. As of the 3rd quarter of 2023, a net EUR 200 million has been invested in the project. The increase is generally due to increased purchase prices for goods and services throughout the project period as well as somewhat delayed deliveries of equipment. The start-up of production of packaging in Golbey is postponed to the second half of 2024 due to delivery delays. Considerable effort will be devoted going forward to ensure that the conversion project is completed within the new framework. The Golbey project will convert a paper machine (PM1) from producing newsprint to producing recycled containerboard. The machine will have a capacity of 550,000 tonnes and is expected to reach 95% utilisation within 2-3 years after startup. Together with the already converted paper machine (PM3) in Bruck, this project will provide Norske Skog with a total capacity of 760,000 tons of containerboard.
