Smurfit Kappa reports strong progress in its 8th annual Sustainable Development Report

The report, “Sustainability in every fibre” highlights Smurfit Kappa’s focus on designing and enabling truly circular systems, with a unique commitment to use only 100% sustainably sourced fibres in its products and processes. Full transparency is assured through adherence to the GRI 4 Comprehensive sustainability guidelines. Progress made in 2014 against the five newly defined strategic sustainability priorities includes:

Forest –  All raw material used in paper production is now sourced under certified Chain of Custody systems
Climate Change – 21.6% reduction in carbon emissions per tonne of paper produced, on track for 2020 target of 25% reduction
Water – 28% reduction in organic content of water (COD) returned to the environment from mills, on track for 2020 target of 33% reduction
Waste –  Twelve out of 38 paper mills effectively did not send waste to landfill in 2014
People – 80% response rate to the first company-wide employee engagement survey, MyVoice2014

Commenting on the strong performance outlined in the report, Gary McGann, Group Chief Executive Officer at Smurfit Kappa said:

Cascades Launches its Fourth Sustainability Action Plan “Driving Positive Change”

In the context of the upcoming World Environment Day, and following a year of work and consultations with stakeholders, Cascades, the 17th most sustainable company in the world according to Global 100, is pleased to launch its fourth Sustainability Action Plan, the most ambitious in its history: "Driving Positive Change". The plan, which includes 15 defined targets for 2025 and 2030, is based on four main pillars: Respectful of the Planet, Solutions Driven, Community Minded, and People Focused. It is also aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and with the recommendations of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Cascades is launching a plan which contains several targets to further reduce its environmental footprint. Among these are: *Reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions of paper manufacturing plants by 38.7% by 2030 compared with 2019 (kg of CO2 eq./metric tonnes) *Reducing Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 22% by 2030 compared with 2019 (kg of CO2 eq./metric tonnes) *Sourcing 100% renewable electricity by 2030 *Reducing paper mill water effluents by 15% by 2025

PEFC extends transition period for 2020 standards

To support certified entities and certification bodies during the COVID-19 challenge, we have extended the transition period for our three revised international standards by six months. This extension applies to the 2020 versions of the Chain of Custody (ST 2002), PEFC Trademarks (ST 2001) and Certification Body Requirements - Chain of Custody (ST 2003) standards. The transition date is now 14 February 2022. This extension gives certified entities and certification and accreditation bodies an additional six months to align their procedures with the requirements in the 2020 versions of these three vital standards. The aim of the extension is to give our stakeholders more flexibility in when they move to the 2020 standards, as we understand the current situation is very difficult for many companies around the world.
