- International Paper announced Thursday it plans to split into two independent, publicly traded companies based on geography, following its acquisition of U.K.-based DS Smith in January 2025.
- Going forward, IP would be comprised of the current North American business, which includes legacy assets from both IP and DS Smith. The Europe, Middle East and Africa business would include legacy assets from both companies in that region. IP’s current EMEA business operates in 30 countries across the region.
- IP expects to complete the spinoff in the next 12 to 15 months, pending board and regulatory approvals in both the United States and United Kingdom.

Stora Enso has signed an agreement to divest its real estate of the Sunila site in Kotka, Finland, to AALTO Development Oy. AALTO Development is a Finnish, privately-owned property development company focusing on high-quality architecture and urban planning. Stora Enso will remain in Sunila as a tenant to AALTO Development. The Lignode battery material pilot plant will continue its operations in Sunila. Also, the Sunila-based demonstration plant engineering study, announced earlier by CarbonScape, is unaffected by the transaction. The parties have agreed not to disclose the transaction price. The closing of the transaction is expected during Q4 2024.
Amcor plc and Berry Global Group, Inc. announced the expiration of the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act of 1976 in connection with the previously announced combination of the two companies. Expiration of the waiting period satisfies another closing condition necessary for completing the combination. The companies also confirm that a number of additional approvals have been received from regulatory authorities in recent weeks, including antitrust clearances from China and Brazil. Progress toward obtaining remaining regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions is well advanced. The companies continue to expect transaction close in the middle of calendar year 2025.
Smurfit Kappa announced it has signed an agreement to acquire Pusa Pack S.L., a bag-in-box packaging plant located in Onda, close to Castellón in the Valencian region. Pusa Pack S.L. specialises in the manufacture of large-capacity flexible bags, sized from 200 to 1500 litres ,which are used for the storage and transport of bulk food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and other liquid and semi-liquid products. Pusa Pack will be integrated into Smurfit Kappa’s Bag-in-Box operations in Spain. Commenting on the acquisition, Thierry Minaud, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box, said: “Heavy-duty packaging is evolving towards more environmentally friendly solutions. We increasingly see the trend of companies moving away from plastic or stainless steel intermediate bulk containers (IBC) in favour of much more sustainable corrugated solutions which have a considerably lower carbon footprint.
