Today, binders are largely based on components of fossil origin. Stora Enso has created a binder, NeoLigno® by Stora Enso - Bio-based materials | Stora Enso NeoLigno® by Stora Enso, which is made of bio-based materials. Stora Enso together with RISE, IsoTimber, and Moelven, have proven that the bio-based binder works in construction elements on industrial scale, making them 100% fossil-free. NeoLigno® by Stora Enso is a binder made from lignin, which is an organic polymer present in all land-living plants, such as trees. Lignin is the natural binder in wood, it keeps the fibers together and protects the material from rotting. NeoLigno® is bio-based and free from formaldehyde and isocyanate. For two and a half years, Stora Enso, RISE, IsoTimber, and Moelven have worked together in a project with the aim to produce fossil-free construction boards and elements.

Total European shipments of graphic papers in February 2021 were down 14.1% vs. February 2020 and are down 18.3% year-to-date. Total European shipments of newsprint in February 2021 were down 20.2% vs. February 2020 and are down 21.6% year-to-date. Total European shipments of sc-magazine in February 2021 were down 15.8% vs. February 2020 and are down 21.3% year-to-date. Total European shipments of coated mechanical reels in February 2021 were down 15.3% vs. February 2020 and are down 20.5% year-to-date. Total European shipments of uncoated mechanical (improved & others) in February 2021 were UP 2.5% vs. February 2020 and are down 9.4% year-to-date. Total European shipments of coated woodfree in February 2021 were down 19.3% vs. February 2020 and are down 23.5% year-to-date. Total European shipments of uncoated woodfree in February 2021 were down 8.2% vs. February 2020 and are down 11.7% year-to-date.

With a second e-boiler, Sappi takes a further step towards sustainability and advancing decarbonisation. For paper manufacturer Sappi, sustainability and climate protection are of paramount importance and are at the root of a long-term global commitment. In 2021, Sappi invested in the modernisation of its steam generation boiler at its Maastricht mill in the Netherlands. To reduce CO2 emissions, part of the gas-generated steam was replaced by electric steam via the new e-boiler. The electricity used is generated mainly from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. The innovative technology has proven so successful that Sappi will now be investing in a second e-boiler which is expected to further reduce CO2 emissions year after year. Construction of the new e-boiler has already begun, with delivery and commissioning planned for the end of 2025.
