Domtar and Nature Conservancy of Canada launch largest private conservation securement in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is announcing a bold campaign to protect more than 1,800 hectares (4,400 acres) of boreal forest, freshwater shoreline and wetlands in central Newfoundland and Labrador. It is the largest land donation NCC has received during its 54-year history working in Atlantic Canada.

Domtar has agreed to donate land to NCC, thus allowing NCC to conserve four large parcels of forested lands and waters along the Southwest Gander River and Gander Lake near the communities of Glenwood and Appleton. The land donation project is significant as it enables better wildlife movement through connected conservation lands. Less than three per cent of the Central Newfoundland ecoregion currently falls under conservation status.

Consultation on Revision of FSC’s Chain of Custody standards

FSC is revising the Chain of Custody Standards and the corresponding accreditation standard. These standards ensure that products which are sold with an FSC claim originate from well-managed forests, controlled sources, reclaimed materials, or a mixture of these. The standards included in this consultation are the following: *FSC-STD-40-004 Chain of Custody Certification *FSC-STD-40-007 Sourcing Reclaimed Material for use in FSC Product Groups or FSC Certified Projects *FSC-STD-40-003 Chain of Custody Certification of Multiple Sites *FSC-PRO-40-003 Development of National Group Chain of Custody Eligibility Criteria. As part of the conceptual phase, FSC is conducting a public consultation and would like to invite interested stakeholders to participate. In this conceptual phase, key topics that are proposed to be addressed during the revision and questions for consideration will be included.

Finland sets world-leading 30% biofuel obligation for 2030

The Finnish Parliament has yesterday 6 February 2019 approved a law that sets a gradually increasing 30% biofuels target for 2030. Furthermore, the law sets a world-leading advanced biofuels target of 10% in 2030. UPM welcomes the Finnish government's ambition to take transport decarbonisation seriously: "UPM is a leading producer of advanced biofuels as defined by the EU Renewable Energy Directive, and we consider this move by Finland as a bold step forward in setting concrete measures for transport decarbonisation," says Sari Mannonen, Vice President, UPM Biofuels.
