AAP October 2021 StatShot Report

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) today released its StatShot report for October 2021 reflecting reported revenue for all tracked categories, including Trade (Consumer Books), K-12 Instructional Materials, Higher Education Course Materials, and Professional Publishing.

Total revenues across all categories for October 2021 were up 23.1% as compared to October 2020, coming in at $1.4 billion. Year to date revenues were up 13.7%, at $13.1 billion for the first ten months of the year.

Trade (Consumer Books) sales were up 16.8% in October, coming in at $1.1 billion. Religious press revenues were up 29.4% in October, coming in at $71.3 million. During October of 2021 Education revenues were $284.4 million, up 62.4% compared with October of 2020. Professional Books, including business, medical, law, technical and scientific, were up 5.3% during the month, coming in at $29.5 million.

Total revenues across all categories for August 2024 were up 8.5% as compared to August 2023, coming in at $1.7 billion. Year-to-date revenues were up 7.8%, at $9.3 billion for the first eight months of the year. Trade (Consumer Books) revenues were up 13.4% in August, coming in at $848.2 million. In terms of physical paper format revenues during the month of August, in the Trade (Consumer Books) category, Hardback revenues were up 17.1%, coming in at $297.4 million; Paperbacks were up 6.7%, with $302.0 million in revenue; Mass Market was down 35.8% to $8.6 million; and Special Bindings were up 3.6%, with $21.5 million in revenue. eBook revenues were up 6.1% for the month as compared to August 2023 for a total of $90.4 million, and the Digital Audio format was up 38.8% for August, coming in at $93.9 million in revenue. Physical Audio was down 54.8% coming in at $600 thousand.

Labor disputes in U.S., Canada could disrupt supply chain ops (chainstoreage.com)

While a tentative contract agreement has been reached at West Coast ports, that doesn’t mean supply chain disruptions are over. Retailers are closely following labor disputes at ports in western Canada and a potential Teamsters strike against United Parcel Service. In Canada, workers are on strike at two of the country’s busiest ports: the Port of Vancouver and the Port of Prince Rupert. The walkout started on July 1. Here at home, the Teamsters Union and UPS last week accused each other of abandoning labor negotiations which are aimed at averting what would be the largest strike in the U.S. since the 1950s.
