AAP January 2021 Snapshot Report

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) today released its StatShot report for January 2021 reflecting reported revenue for all tracked categories, including Trade (Consumer Books), K-12 Instructional Materials, Higher Education Course Materials, Professional Publishing, and University Presses.

Total revenues across all categories for January 2021 were up 10.3% as compared to January 2020, coming in at $1.2 billion.

Trade (Consumer Books) Revenues
Trade (Consumer Books) sales were up 21.3% in January, coming in at $689.5 million.

In terms of physical paper format revenues during the month of January, in the Trade (Consumer Books) category, Hardback revenues were up 25.5%, coming in at $244.2 million; Paperbacks were up 17.9%, with $227.5 million in revenue; Mass Market was up 39.9% to $19.5 million; and Board Books were down 3.4%, with $17.2 million in revenue.

eBook revenues were up 21.0% for the month as compared to January of 2020 for a total of $91.6 million. The Downloaded Audio format was up 17.6% for January, coming in at $59.1 million in revenue. Physical Audio was up 21.8% coming in at $2.0 million.

Religious Presses
Religious press revenues were down 0.5% in January, coming in at $61.7 million. Revenue fell across all tracked formats, with the exception of eBooks which rose 15.3% to $4.5 million.

Education
During January 2021 Education revenues were $462.7 million, down 2.3% compared with January of 2020.

Revenues from Higher Education Course Materials were down 2.6% for the month, as compared to January of 2020, coming in at $429.7 million.

PreK-12 Instructional Materials revenues were up 1.6% for January 2021, at $33.0 million. More in-depth information on PreK-12 Books and Materials Monthly is included in AAP’s PreK-12 monthly report.

Professional Books
Professional Books, including business, medical, law, technical and scientific, were up 8.0% during the month, coming in at $51.0 million.

Small Press Community Slowly Builds Back after SPD Failure (publishersweekly.com)

A little more than three months after Small Press Distribution abruptly closed, leaving some 400 independent presses without a trade distributor, publishers and distributors alike are moving forward even as damage assessment continues. Approximately 25% of the stranded publishers have found new distributors: Asterism Books has signed about 80 presses, Itasca Books has onboarded 21, and Independent Publishers Group has taken on 11. An informal deadline of June 30 had previously been set for publishers to remove their inventory from Ingram Content Group and Publisher Storage and Shipping warehouses, to which SPD had sent their books as part of a failed plan to reinvent the distributor. Pam Nuffer, director of sales and marketing for PSSC, said that about 75% of the publishers who have inventory with them have provided PSSC with instructions on where their inventory should be shipped, and that PSSC has already shipped out about half of the books.

Publishers, Authors, Booksellers and Libraries File Supreme Court Amicus Brief in Support of First Amendment Rights in Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton

On September 23, 2024, the Association of American Publishers, along with the American Booksellers for Free Expression, Authors Guild, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Freedom to Read Foundation, and Independent Book Publishers Association filed an amicus brief supporting the Free Speech Coalition in the Supreme Court case Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton. The brief argues that Texas law HB 1181, which requires age-verification on websites where over one-third of the content is considered “harmful to minors,” violates the First Amendment because it will impede access by adults and older minors to constitutionally protected materials, including contemporary fiction, literary classics, young adult fiction, and health books. The brief also argues that the Fifth Circuit’s failure to apply strict scrutiny amounted to a radical departure from decades of legal precedent.

Postal Service Announces Pre-Filing Conference To Discuss Proposed Operational Improvements

The United States Postal Service announced it will host a pre-filing virtual conference to discuss its plans to improve mail processing and transportation, and how these improvements will align with proposed refinements within its existing service standards for Mail and Package Products. The Postal Service will consider the comments received during the virtual conference and will thereafter file its formal request asking for an advisory opinion from the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC). After receiving an advisory opinion from the PRC, the Postal Service will consider the Commission’s opinion and finalize its decision. Central to the virtual conference discussion will be the proposed operational improvements and corresponding refinements to process, transport and deliver all categories of mail and packages through an integrated network without expanding the existing day ranges of service standards, and for some products shortening the current day ranges. These refinements will deliver important benefits to the organization and its customers as the Postal Service continues to implement a more efficient and effective operating model.
